This school has just been rated Outstanding by Ofsted! Our congratulations to the head teacher, Mrs Li-Juan Ellerton, and all the teachers, children, parents, governors and other members of the school community.
This video shows how the Education in Human Values programme helped them do it.
When she was first appointed as head teacher at Waltham St Lawrence Primary School near Maidenhead in Berkshire, Li-Juan Ellerton put the Education in Human Values (EHV) programme into action throughout the school.
Three years later the Ofsted inspectors visited the school and raised the school’s classification from Good to Outstanding.
They observed that the school’s values ensure that the personal development of pupils is threaded through all aspects of school life. They reported that the value of ‘love’ supported pupils to develop tolerance and respect for others, and the values of ‘encouragement’ enabled them to support each other and flourish. They described pupils’ behaviour as exemplary, while pupils’ attainment in all subjects was consistently above that of other pupils nationally at all ages. Li-Juan says, “The school ethos is underpinned by core values. It’s all about developing the whole child.” The success of the school in doing this is very clear. When asked why values are important a pupil answers: “To help me with the rest of my life!”
It is no surprise that the teachers are fully behind the programme. One of them says: “Values are at the core of everything.”
Parents are very supportive too and have been completely involved in the process by Mrs Ellerton and her teaching team. They appreciate the warmth and tolerance of the children, and feel that the positive, supportive environment of the school is very much due to the emphasis on values. “We really see values in action!”
